Reasons to Join
LDYS is a very unusual organisation within British politics and is in the position to offer many different opportunities. See some examples here.
If you would like to join LDYS, visit www.libdems.org.uk and join there. Remember, you qualify for the £6 concessionary rate. Once you've done that, please send an email to ldysadmin@libdems.org.uk so we can ensure you're added to our membership database.
I'm interested in… a particular issue
You can suggest an idea for us to campaign on via this website. Once you submit an idea the executive will contact you to work through any rough edges there might be, then, assuming it fits in with our beliefs as a party, we'll plan out what resources we can allocate to the campaign. You will become the campaign lead which means you'll have a budget and be answerable to our Vice Chair Campaigns, and you'll get the full support of LDYS in running the campaign.
I'm interested in… meeting like-minded people
LDYS has branches all across the country but especially in university towns. These branches organise social activities as well as more serious things such as visits from MPs and discussions on policy. In the same way that LDYS in general can offer a variety of things, so can these branches. Liberal Bristol, the author's branch, has recently been involved with EU-funded trips to Brussels, inter-party sporting events, a politics social dinner and LDYS conference.
I'm interested in… international politics
We are members of IFLRY and LYMEC, international and European liberal organisations respectively, and regularly send representatives to their conferences, seminars and congresses. Some examples in the last year include Hamburg and Dallas, Texas. These organisations often heavily subsidise travel and it's a great way to experience foreign politics first hand.
I'm interested in… representing my area
Many LDYS members are local councilors, heads of constituency parties and other positions. Jo Swinson, MP was vice-chair of LDYS a few years ago. All local parties are required to have at least one LDYS representative so becoming involved is even easier if you're part of LDYS.
I'm interested in… writing about current affairs
Part of Vice Chair, Communications's mandate is to publish a regular magazine for its membership. This used to be called "Free Radical" but under the current executive has become The Yell!. This takes the form of a short email newsletter every month and a less-frequent paper publication.
I'm interested in… changing party policy
LDYS has representatives on federal policy committee and quite possibly the largest number of voting representative positions to federal conference. In fact, we often have more votes at conference than we have people that want their opinions heard! We also propose policies that have resulted from our own policy committee and our single issue campaigns to conference, the most recent being "Save Darfur" which was extremely well received by the parliamentary party.
