LY International and LIBG presents… A Forum on Belarus
Liberal Youth International and Liberal International British Group will be co-hosting a forum on Belarus on Monday 6th February 2012 (arrive at 6.30pm for 7pm start).
The event will include leading speakers on the economic and political situation, as well as the experiences of Belarussian activists. The aim of the Forum is to raise awareness of Belarusian political and economic crises whilst discussing solutions and the future outlook.
Belarus has often been described as the Last Dictatorship in Europe, with the regime using its KGB police force to crack down on dissident protests. In December last year, Alyaksandr Lukashenko was re-elected president of Belarus, with 79.7% of the vote in elections deemed to fall massively short of OSCE standards.
Speakers:
- Chair: Jonathan Fryer
- Alex Nice, Programme Coordinator, Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House
- Jo Swinson MP, Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire
- Yarik Kyrvoi – Founder and Editor of Belarus Digest
- A Belarusian opposition political activist
