Referendum On The European Constitution

Policy supporting Liberal Democrat policy to call for a referendum and promote a Pro-Europe campaign.
Conference notes:
- That we are the only principled pro-European mainstream party in the country.
- That currently we don't use this properly to the party’s benefit.
- That the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP)'s potential splintering because of Kilroy poses both a threat and an opportunity, as both are likely to contest both Council and Parliamentary seats at the next election.
- That although Europe has brought us many benefits, people are often only informed of the problems.
- That already Lithuania, Hungary and Slovenia have ratified the constitution through their parliaments.
Conference further notes:
- That unlike UKIP, we are not a shallow single-issue party.
- That we know that people don't want Europe shoved down their throats, but risk voting no because they don't always get given the full picture by the media.
- Recognises that the current constitution proposal isn't perfect- but that, like the House of Lords reform, it is one step in an ongoing process.
- That we need to work harder now to raise the profile of our MEPs to demonstrate to people that every person in the country is represented by a Liberal Democrat at European level and so Lib Dems CAN "Win here"..
- That LDYS already benefits from the support of MEPs, LDEG (the Liberal Democrat European Group) and that as young people and students with more opportunities than ever before we should be helping to promote the benefits of Europe.
Conference resolves:
- To take positive action to promote Europe both internally within the party, to its members and also to the public in general.
- To start actively campaigning towards the referendum bearing in mind that the case for Europe cannot be a "once in a generation" activity.
Conference calls:
- For its members active in local parties, youth/students groups and the like, to encourage more small articles in FOCUS Newsletters to include the European dimension.
- For Liberal Democrats to help dispel the myths while out canvassing for the General Election and prepare the ground for the referendum campaign.
